Titanic was almost a gigantic flop! Have you ever heard this before? No way, right? Well, according to various sources online, Titanic was initially headed for commercial failure.
Now it is considered one of the most profitable movies of all time.
This is our new blog segment about movies that critics missed the mark on – we’ll focus on blockbusters first and gradually introduce lesser-known movies for discussion.
Our first film is Titanic – yes, the “blockbuster” historic romance/drama from esteemed director James Cameron.
DID YOU KNOW: Before Titanic‘s release, various film critics predicted the film would be a significant disappointment at the box office?
According to Wikipedia, Titanic was heralded as one of the most expensive films to make and James Cameron apparently took a lot of flack for this from industry insiders. Some were rude enough to even say that it was because of his colossal ego. So you can totally understand why James Cameron did what he did when he won the Best Director’s Academy Award for this film. I would have done the same thing! Well, maybe not the same thing… but you get my meaning. Here’s the iconic moment via YouTube. And also, I completely forgot that James Cameron was married to Linda Hamilton as well!
I am all for voting for the underdog, and James Cameron certainly was that back then. He has directed many brilliant films since Titanic and is considered by peers and fans alike to be one of the most celebrated and talented directors on the planet.
It just goes to show that sometimes, the people who know best aren’t always right and taking a gamble on a film that blows its financial budget can end up being profitable. Who knew?
