THE OLD MAN MOVIE

I’m not going to lie about the fact that when I looked at the trailer for this movie, I was a little afraid. I think it was my knee-jerk reaction to seeing something I didn’t have a lot of experience reviewing (stop motion animated movies), but I am a fan of anime and animated films. So I wanted to give this film a go. Stop animation films can be a little jarring to watch. And if the story doesn’t work, then it’s usually a nod off from me. But something about this film captured my attention from beginning to end. I can’t really explain it; suffice it to say that The Old Man Movie is like nothing you’ve ever seen. It really is that unique.

The movie is about milk. There’s no beating about the bush. That is how it’s marketed in the poster and the blurbs. It is essentially a story about an older man who kind of loses his mind over milking his cow. Then the story splits off and focuses on two kids who are visiting their grandpa. And he is also obsessed with milk and milking his cow.

The rest is a really crazy journey around the township where this story is set (somewhere in rural Finland). One particular cow has run away from its owner, and the kids and their grandpa need to get to this cow before its udder explodes. Once you get past the first 20 or 30 minutes, you become invested in the family and their weird and wacky adventure to find this cow.

The animation is also unique. I’ve seen stop-motion animation before, but not like this. I am not sure if the people from the village are supposed to look deformed, but some of them do. I am sure the creators did this on purpose because it’s funny to see these strange expressions on weird and deformed faces. Once you stand back and look at the amount of detail in the animation, it really is pretty amazing stuff. One word of warning, though – there are some parts of the film that are clearly made for adults. I wouldn’t be showing this animated movie to kids even though it looks perfectly harmless.

I was determined to look at this movie for what it is, and that is a unique, strange, yet also interesting journey of a family and their adventure to find their cow. I think it’s one of the unique movie experiences I’ve ever had, and I don’t say that lightly.
